I was thinking of a scenario about Atlantis. No sinking islands, although it does involve the Guanches and Berbers.

Let's suppose these proto-Guanches build a substantial civilization and settle in the Azores, but then decline happened and when the Portuguese came around, the Guanches in the Azores are fighting among each other. For some reason, Azores and Madeira was heavily settled with Greek refugees from the Ottoman invasion. As a result, a hybrid Guanche-Greek culture evolved, and a new Atlantis myth was born.

During the Napoleonic wars the Atlanteans tried to enlist Napoleon's help but were stopped by Portugal. It is basically a pre-British Home Rule Ireland kind of situation, where the local Portuguese (known as Azoreans) rule among a mixed Greek-Guanche population, known as Atlanteans, now speaking a Hellenic language. It is when the monarchy fell in 1910 when Atlantis becomes independent. Sao Miguel and Santa Maria, majority Portuguese, remained with the Motherland, as well as Madeira, now fully Lusitanianized. They sided on the behalf of the Allies in both World Wars, though it is mainly by naval actions and giving the Allies ports to use.

The Atlanteans are a people speaking a Greek-derived language but are Catholic. They have some Portuguese and recent Greek minorities.

What do you think of this scenario?
